When you’re planning a printed publication, the terminology can feel a little confusing — especially when it comes to choosing the right format to communicate your message. Should you create a brochure, booklet, zine, or a full magazine? Although these formats may look similar on the surface, each one has its own purpose, style, and strengths.

We’ve put together a clear guide to help you choose the right type of publication for your project.

Brochure

A brochure is typically used to promote a business, service, event, campaign, or product. They have a few key features that make them easy to identify.

They are usually bi-fold (4 pages) or tri-fold (6 panels), but can also take the form of a short multi-page leaflet. The messaging is concise, includes clear calls to action, and is ideal for sales, marketing, and distributing essential information.

Booklet

A booklet is a mini-publication. It offers more detail than a brochure but is not as content-heavy as a magazine. It strikes a practical balance between the two.

Booklets are typically 8–24 pages, staple-bound, and include a clean blend of images and text.
They’re most commonly used for guides, programmes, and instruction manuals—the perfect format for what’s-on guides, show programmes, or community information packs.

Zine

Zines are small, creative, expressive, and often community-driven publications. They embrace a DIY spirit and are perfect for celebrating art, culture, or niche interests.

They are usually self-published, expressive in design, produced in small print runs, and ideal for storytelling, creativity, and giving a platform to community voices.

Magazine

Magazines are the most substantial format and offer a premium, editorial-style reading experience.
They are usually more than 20 pages, follow a structured editorial layout, include high-quality imagery, and often offer advertising spaces that can help offset production costs.

Magazines work well for community publications, lifestyle titles, industry magazines, school/college magazines, and any project with recurring or content-rich issues.
