Community magazines are a brilliant way to celebrate everything that makes your area so special. They connect, uplift and bring people together. They’re usually born from passion and dried by a real desire to serve others.
If you’re thinking about creating your own community magazine, there are a few core areas your can’t ignore if you want your publication to thrive. We absolutely love designing Thrapston Life and Oundle Life – both shining examples of how a magazine can celebrate the vibrancy of a community. And now, we’re sharing everything we’ve learned to help make your magazine a success too!
Step 1: Start With the Fundamentals
Planning is everything. Before you dive into layouts and cover ideas, take time to define your niche and understand your audience. Build a reader archetype — what matters in their day-to-day life? What would make your magazine an essential read?
Do some market research, look at your analytics and check out any competitors. It’s also wise to create a simple business plan. Community magazines can be incredibly rewarding, but there are costs involved with design, printing and distribution. Consider selling advertising space or partnering with local businesses — this can offset production costs and make your magazine more financially sustainable, all while offering value to your readers.
Step 2: Develop Content That Truly Connects
Your magazine needs content — not just any content, but stories that resonate with your community. Spend time building your content pillars and recurring themes. This helps keep your message consistent and saves you from the dreaded content block later on!
High-quality imagery is also essential. A great photo stops readers in their tracks and brings your stories to life.
And of course, design matters. A well-designed magazine signals credibility, looks professional and makes information easier (and more enjoyable!) to digest.
Step 3: Launch, Grow and Shine
Now your magazine is looking AMAZING, it’s time to think about distribution. Do you want to publish in print, digitally, or a hybrid of the two?
If you’re printing, make sure the quality is high and the materials feel good in the hand. We always recommend getting a printed proof — nobody wants to discover a huge typo after 1000 copies have rolled off the printers!
If you’re going digital, check your hosting can handle the file size and that your links work wherever the magazine is shared.
Finally, marketing is key. Promote your magazine on social media, collaborate with local groups, and get it into the places your audience already loves.
